Art Forgery! Does this mean I've finally made it?

I received an email inquiry this morning with a link to this post. The inquirer asked: "Hello, I have run across this sculpture and not 100 percent if it is made by you the originator Julie Elkins
can you confirm it?" Well the answer is absolutely NOT!...but my surrealist tendancies are making me second guess that absolute...my name IS carved on the butt. Thanks internet. Please exit through the WORM HOLE to your right.

Tile Mosaic Mural Fun!!

I received an Artists in Schools Grant from the Florida Keys Council of the Arts! I wanted to create a public piece of Artwork that was designed and created by the kids I had been mentoring at the Boys and Girls Club. The outside of the building was in desperate need of something life affirming.  I knew the kids had the abilities to take on such a massive project and to complete a project like this would build their confidence and self-awareness. I also wanted the work to be something public and on display to the entire community, it would be a constant reminder of their success. The kids were involved in every aspect of the process. We formed a mural committee and voted on a design, collaborated on the layout, sorted tile into appropriate colors, adhered tile pieces, and finally grouted and cleaned the surface of the mosaic.  The students witnessed their ideas “come to life” through hard work, self-discovery, cooperation and persistence. I was confident that we had created something great when one of the students ran off the bus, seeing the completed mural for the first time he dropped down to his knees and screamed Dr. Frankenstein style: “Finally!!!! My idea come to Life!!!!!!”

Key West Holiday Parade!

Worked with the kids at Boys and Girls Club Key West this past month on a float for the holiday parade. The theme for our float was "Dream Big".  We paper mached an enormous boy and girl, made clouds, rainbows, flying dragons and topped the whole thing off with glittery letters and lights. All our materials were salvaged from the local bike shop or donated. The kids had a blast and will be proud to learn that we won "Best Float" out of 70 floats in the non-profit category!

Salty Influences.

Here are some works in progress for my upcoming show at Sherrie Gallerie in October. The Keys have had an interesting influence.

Chinese Year of the Water Dragon!

I had fun reinventing this retired paddle from previous Dragon Boat Races. The paddle is up for raffle at this years' race and the proceeds will go to the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. The festival is being held at Sombrero Beach, Marathon, FL. May 12, 2012.
